The Trends Report It's Only Natural

Neutral palette, natural fibers, a softer hand, and more “down to earth look” ... we love the naturals! For the longest time home furnishing fabrics were shiny, slick and rayon-y, but now the pendulum has swung and we see the re-emergence of the natural fabrics - linens, matkas (a slubby raw silk) and cottons. In September, we went to “Mood” (Meet Only Original Design), the fabric show in Brussels, Belgium. The moment we walked through the door we were struck by the dominance of the natural fibers. Not to mention the 30 foot high sign that was hard to miss - OK Europe is definitely in the mood for naturals.....

Here are some fabrics we found in Brussels -

But, how about the natural fabrics in the U.S. market? Last month we went to visit our fabric suppliers in New York. Our goal was to find some linens, matkas and cottons, but hey - this is Marge Carson so we wanted to glam them up a little. So how about a matka embroidery with silver lurex thread for some shine and wow factor?

Or maybe a linen with a floral pattern embroidered in wool, accented with matte gold sequins? Now we're talking Marge style....

We did get a head start on the Natural Trend at October Furniture Market. We introduced several new fabrics in Matka and Linen.

Our new natural fabrics include (left to right) Instrumental Melody (wool embroidery on matka), Serenade Linen (silk embroidery on Linen) and Houdini Jungle (viscose velvet on flax and bamboo base). We love the casual yet elegant feel that the new natural fabrics evoke. Count on seeing more linens and matkas at markets to come. The new natural fabrics may be a trend because they are fresh and new, but what could be more timeless and what better way to infuse your home with casual, elegant sophistication?
