HIGH POINT, N.C. (October 12, 2009) --- True to form, upholstery fashion leader Marge Carson brings a stunning hand-selected collection of visually stimulating and lavishly textured fabrics to the October Furniture Market. Customized exclusively for Marge Carson, the fabric, leather and trim collections originated from the finest textile mills, studios and cottage industries found globally.
Engaging European, Asian and American influences, Marge Carson's textile introductions are nubby and smooth, embroidered and appliqued, hand painted, hand woven and hand printed. While the visual look may be muted neutrals or clear brilliant color, the common thread is rich and luxurious texture - Marge Carson style.
Included are fabrics that gain texture from a technique called Fil Coupe (French for "cut threads"). The designs are hand embroidered and then the threads are snipped in the middle creating a fuzzy thick texture to the touch in contrast to the smooth background.
Marge Carson's fabric introductions also gain their texture from gutsy natural fibers including cotton, linen, hemp, wool and silk. "They evoke a sense of home and comfort while lending elegant sophistication to the furnishings they accent," said Christine Rendino, who leads the upholstery fashion design team for Marge Carson.
Others include a metallic bronze Eco-Leather embroidered with contrasting metallic and cotton threads. "The result is a highly tactile fabric that would be a beautiful statement on a multiple of applications from dining chairs to accent pillows," Rendino said.
Rendino said that the dominate trend observed at the international upholstery fabric market held recently in Brussels was velvet. "It's the buzzword in Europe," she said. "There were cut velvets, velvet jacquards and velvets printed with metallic overlays and the range of colors was amazing. We especially loved the silks that were appliqued with brightly colored velvets, metal sequins and embroidered with metallic threads, the end result - a celebration of all that is textural."
"And finally, my special favorite - a black cotton velvet, hand embroidered in brilliant autumn toned wools for a tres chic way to add texture to your home," Rendino said. "We named it Magnanimous Spirit."
These and other new fabrics will dress and adorn more than a dozen new upholstered items. All will carry Marge Carson's leadership positions in style, scale, shape, construction and hands-on upper-end upholstering craftsmanship.
Rendino said a showstopper will be a 115-inch sofa called "Camila" featuring graceful sweeping arms continuing into a contoured back that is outlined with a hand carved wood cross banded rope detail finished in a rich wood tone and trimmed in metal leaf. The sumptuous curved seating depths are styled with multi down filled pillows and each skirt, button and trim finely detailed to express the craftsmanship and attention to the very best that is Marge Carson.
"It's the "Wow" sofa," Rendino playfully adds. "It is a hybrid of an asymmetrical design styled with hand carved wood trim that embraces the entire sofa."
